Aim

In this post we will be installing Python3.8 on Ubuntu-18.04

Prerequisite

  • Ubuntu 18.04 operating system must be available

Step 2 : Installing the dependencies

  • update the apt repository
sudo apt update
  • Install the dependencies
sudo apt install build-essential zlib1g-dev libncurses5-dev libgdbm-dev libnss3-dev libssl-dev libreadline-dev libffi-dev wget

Step 2 : Download the source Code

  • You need to download the Python 3.8 source code
  • Go to the folder where you want to download Python3.8 and run the below command
wget https://www.python.org/ftp/python/3.8.5/Python-3.8.5.tar.xz
  • once downloaded you need to extract the contents
tar -xvf Python-3.8.5.tar.xz

Step 3 : Configure the installation that will check all the dependencies

  • Go inside the extracted folder contents and use below commands
cd Python-3.8.5
./configure

Step 3 : Install Python3.8 as an alternative

sudo make altinstall
  • This may take some time depending on your operating system configuration.

Check Python3.8 installation

python3.8 --version

Find the path of python installation

  • Use the below command to find the installation path of Python3.8
whereis python3.8
  • This will also give you information about the Python3.8 related libraries folder and config folder.
